Well we have been pretty fortunate so far with not having any of the infamous Dutch winds! Until today, that is!

We found a somewhat sheltered spot for lunch at a “Melk tap” at a dairy farm along the way. You can bring your own bottle and fill up right here. We bought some eggs but skipped the milk. Note the flags….

We were heading south into a Beaufort ‘5’ on the scale which is equivalent to 29-38 km/hr. E ought to slow us down considerably and at a couple of places almost knock me and my dear GIGI, my name for my trusty bicycle, right over! There were some serious gusts on top of the IJssel River dike, so much that at one point I did have to get off and push!

We finally made it into Doesburg where we headed straight to the oldest pub in Netherlands…1448!

The Netherlands and Germany have a number of so-called Hanseatic cities, Hanzestad in Dutch. One of them is Doesburg. A old village that has its origins back to 1237 and is therefore older than Amsterdam. Doesburg is a fortified village, on the river the IJssel which has two river side arms. This geographical location plays an important role in the history.
