It really is quite lovely to stay in the small towns that dot the Doubs River along the Eurovelo 6. So quiet and peaceful! Monday night we were in a gîte in Pompiére-le-Doubs. The only issue is getting groceries (especially on Sundays!) to make our dinner, lunch and breakfast. These towns rarely have restaurants and the accommodations we choose all have some kind of cooking facilities. So I have managed to find supermarkets along the route where we stock up and then carry on to our gîte. Somehow we manage to cram the food into our panniers!
The scenery here is quite different from the Moselle as now we are in a valley carved out of the limestone cliffs. There is very little industry and lots of forests with a few farms…mostly cattle and some equestrian centres.
This morning we are in Vaire Le Grand and will be heading to Besançon where there is a big farmers market. We also have to get to the tourist office. We met a woman from New Zealand yesterday who reported that there is construction along the Eurovelo 6 and it is closed! From our maps we can see an alternative route but we are not sure exactly where the closure is and for how far along. Hopefully we can get some details! In any case there are cycling routes along both sides of the river, but not necessarily the bridges required to get to your destination!
