We have been having some pretty good winds here for a couple of days…between 40 and 50 Km/hr and gusting up to 67 last night! We haven’t tried snorkelling because we thought the seas might be too rough, but today we decided to head over to Coral View just to check it out. As we were driving along the waterfront we were surprised to see a sailboat quite close into shore…then we noticed that it wasn’t actually moving or anchored but stuck on the shallow reef with the wind and waves pounding on his starboard side! The story goes that the guy was out drinking heavily last night then fell asleep on the boat that was anchored in the harbour. It seems that his anchor didn’t hold in the strong winds and when he woke up the next morning…there he was on the reef! And according to the police officer we chatted with at the scene, he was still drunk when they went over to the boat to make sure everyone was ok.
I did manage to get a video recording of the ‘botched’ rescue attempt. Check it out on my YouTube channel.(@rosemaryadmick217)
Meanwhile, we checked out the snorkelling possibilities and it looked a bit tenuous with the waves and whitecaps.

BTW, eventually the sailboat was rescued and towed back to the harbour. Apparently his engine is on the fritz and we don’t know if he lost his anchor throughout the mayhem.
