Today’s adventure was a boat ride to Neptune’s on the south shore where there is a restaurant/bar/dock and where there is easy access to the reef from the dock. I’ll explain a bit about the geography of the island. It is a very low lying island made of coral and mangroves and it lies along on the second largest reef on the planet…the MesoAmerican reef. Almost all the buildings are built on ‘stilts’ which is especially good for enjoying the sea breezes. There is only one town on the main road which stretches for about 2 kilometres along the bay (waterfront). Behind the town are a series of lagoons, one of which cuts off the southern part of the island and is called the south shore. There is no road to drive there, boat access only.
The boat ride to Neptunes was about 15 minutes and goes through the lagoon surrounded by mangroves, not outside on the open sea so it was a calm passage and very enjoyable.
The snorkelling was great…lots of small brightly coloured fish and waving fan coral.

Oh yes, and our ever so friendly maintenance guy came by today and chopped down a bunch of green coconuts and poured out a big jug of coconut water for us! DELICIOUS and refreshing!
