This morning we went to the market in town, visited the 700 year old church and wandered around the ‘yacht haven’ (harbour). Only 2 stalls at the market but one of them had some fresh sauerkraut and fermented pickles (ie no vinegar) which at home we eat regularly for all those trendy little bacteria to keep our gut happy. Then it was off to the grocery store to grab a fresh chicken and some creamy yogurt (more happy little bacteria!), they have the best creamiest yogurt here….10% fat! The apartment has a convection oven which should roast up the chicken in short order.
After dropping off the goods, we headed out for a short tour which landed us in the midst of a historic site of….Stalag Luft I was a German World War II prisoner-of-war camp near Barth, Western Pomerania, Germany, for captured Allied airmen. The presence of the prison camp is said to have shielded the town of Barth from Allied bombing. Approximately 9,000 airmen (7,588 American and 1,351 British and Canadian) were imprisoned there when it was liberated on the night of 30 April 1945 by Russian troops.(Wikipedia). All very sobering, but it did bring to mind the old TV series…Hogan’s Heros…which was always good for a chuckle!
And yes, it was sunny blue sky day!

The site of Stalag Luft I…we were riding on the blue trail.

The trail got quite rough and narrow….a bumpy ride for sure!
